Linda Carter Holman

“Desert Lark”

By Linda Carter Holman oil on canvas 48 x 46 2008

Most of the time I'm like the child in the forest
following breadcrumbs,
And as I pick each one up and add it to the others-- a story forms.

Desert Lark
First foot on green earth
Soaring straight from heaven
With joyful song.
Steps forth.

Third Phase --- Story Telling

“The older I get the more I see.
There is a story being told on every level of our existence.
I have often had the feeling that the paintings have a life of their own.
Their stories seem to reveal themselves to me on my canvas, as they choose, in their own time.
And so with me, my personal story is revealed in it's own time through the daily experiences of my life.”

From her birth in a small town in Oklahoma, a childhood lived in Venezuela
and an adult life spent in locations throughout the Southwest and California,
Linda Carter Holman has been inspired by places both actual and imaginary.
Her journey has been one of self-exploration and self-expression.

In late 2000, Linda looked back over her painting history.
She stepped into a new role as writer/director, when she began working on her book entitled
“Evolution of a Self-Taught Painter”. The book is a retrospective overview of her first 35 years of painting.

Today a more in-depth look is occurring.
“I've come to see that the work done during my 38 years of painting-
thus far-can be divided into three phases.
From 1970 to 1985 during the First Phase
my personal style of painting did not come through experimentation as might be expected,
but rather in the tradition of a naïve painter,
I just began to paint in my own way.
Over the years that has not changed—but evolved.

During the Second Phase 1985-2008,
while living in Arizona my Latin roots surfaced.
It was a time of career development; with more focus on subject matter and color.

This year I believe I have entered my Third Phase.
The new paintings include imagined desert landscape--clouds and sky.
And the subjects are more of a Southwestern nature.
They could be Native American, Latin or Cowgirls.
I'm just at the beginning and don't know quite where I will go.
In general I think there is also a color change happening and a simplification.”

"Everything in her paintings appears to be connected, the people, the animals, the landscape, even the sky all seem to flow
with the same rhythm. Most people only see that which separates us, Linda's paintings show the energy that unites all things."
